This novel centers around Jackson Oz, who is looked upon as an outcast among the professional and academic ecologists and biologists. Oz had been trying for years to get ecologists and biologists to listen to data he had been collecting on increasing numbers of mammal attacks on humans. Oz became so obsessed with this that he quit graduate school to devote himself full-time to collect data and argue his case. Finally, on a trip to Botswana, he has to survive an attack by a large band of male lions in which about 100 people are killed in a large geographic area. He saves the life of ecologist Chloe Tousignant and together they seek to warn the world that something has caused mammals of all types to band together in what seems to be an orchestrated effort to eliminate humans. The balance of this novel sees Oz gaining respect for his data and sees world leaders taking misguided actions to solve the problem, only to see even worse mammal attacks threatening the existence of man.
