What is the value of a life?

Social history of Tibet is an amazing book about the relation between China and Tibet dated from 7th till 20th century. The book is divided into two parts, the first one it is about the historical relation and the formation of the feudal serfdom system, which ended only in 1959. The second part is one of most terrible things I’ve read ever. It is about how lords punished theirs serfs and tortured them. The book has several illustrations and I coudn’t believe what I’ve read and seen. How humanity can be so harsh and cruel? they had laws known as “Thirteen Laws” which authorized the lords kill, cut off hands or foot, gouging out eyes and etc… The rituals for Dalai Lama also made me think about what really life means for powerfull people. Just read it: “To hold the Buddhist ceremony of sacrifices to the devas, we need four human heads, ten sets of human intestines, pure blood, impure blood, leper’s blood, various kinds of meat and flesh, human and animal hearts, water the sun has never shone upon, soil raised by a whirlwind, thorns growing facing the north, dog’s dung, human excrement, butcher’s boots, etc. You are expected to send them to Tsechukang on the twentieth day of the month” I’m dead with it :(
