Artists and intellectuals in Paris at the turn of the 20th century spoke of poetry as music, sounds as colors, and paintings as symphonies. No one better exemplifies this obsession with the blending of the arts than Claude Debussy, whose music is so akin to impressionist painting and symbolist poetry. This study examines the sources of Debussy's inspiration, and offers a wealth of technical and interpretative suggestions for pianists, based on the author's own performing ecperience. Illustrated with works of art from the period, Images is a splendid companion to the strikingly original piano music of Debussy. Paul Roberts is a British pianist known internationally for his performances of French music, particularly that of Debussy and Ravel. He has recorded the first two CDs in a series that will eventually present Debussy's complete piano music. A frequent jury member of the International Debussy Piano Competition at Saint-Germain-en-Laye, he is professor of piano at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.
