This work does not prescribe standards that ought to be imposed; it presupposes that language will be taught as an interesting phenomenon in its own right, and it fulfills the presupposition. A compact study, Cattell's book will painlessly provide students, teachers and other interested persons with an account of English grammar which is consonant with the knowledge discovered in modern linguistics; yet its presentation and basic approach will appeal to and be comprehensible to readers with no specialized linguistic training.
