Young Max Poltergeist and his ghost family fall on hard times as they come to realized humans are no longer afraid of ghosts, but they finally find a place for themselves in a Scottish castle in need of haunting. Storm clouds invade the already dark and ominous sky over a small European village. Bats fly. Werewolves howl. Chilling breezes blow, and at a centuries-old castle, the rusty gate creaks open. But even in the black of night, there is nothing to fear from the spirits who have set up house in the eerie setting of the castle dungeon. The happy haunts belong to Mama, Papa, Grandmama, Grandfather, Lily, and Max, an uproarious family of ghosts and spooks who are far more funny than frightening. And yet these are bad times for ghosts: People don't scare as easily as they used to, the castle is being developed into a resort hotel, and Max Poltergeist finds his familiar world falling apart. The great era of ghosting seems to be coming to an end, and Max tells the story of his family's struggle against a new generation of humans who no longer believe in spooks. But in the true spirit of childhood, Max faces up to his own fears and even accepts the new life his family is forced to make for itself in a faraway Scottish castle.
