JAZ –

My mother died giving birth to me.

My father beat me.

I spent my childhood in a boxing gym with a man who I looked up to as father. He died when I was 16, and so did my love for boxing.

Everyone and everything I tried to love gave up on me.

As soon as I turned 18, I packed what little I had into a crappy car and headed for the Gulf Coast.

I made it as far as Austin, Texas, and I ran out of gas.

It’s been said that everything happens for a reason, but I never believed it.

Until now.

When we drove into the coffee shop, she was fighting to get her belongings from the hands of a thief.

Boxing out of a co-ed gym, I’d heard the phrase, you hit like a girl before.

It sure didn’t apply to her.

Other than her devotion, she had very little.

She didn’t believe in love, and she didn’t believe in herself.

In 105 days, she believed in both.
