John Cleland's (1709-1789) erotic novel FANNY HILL, often considered to be the first erotic English-language novel. One of the most-banned works in English, FANNY HILL was outlawed in Britain and the United States prior to the 1960s; uncensored copies were not generally available prior to the 1970s.
Written as a series of letters from Fanny Hill to an unknown woman, the book justifies Fanny's choices through life as a "woman of pleasure."
