Romance de terror gótico com inspirações do movimento romântico, de autoria de Mary Shelley, escritora inglesa e esposa do poeta e ensaísta Percy Bysshe Shelley, relata a história de Victor Frankenstein, um estudante de ciências naturais que busca recriar um ser vivo, uma criatura, através do uso da ciência em seu laboratório.
Mary Shelley escreveu FRANKENSTEIN: O MODERNO PROMETEU quando tinha apenas 19 anos. a obra foi elaborada após o encontro do casal Shelley com Lorde George Gordon Byron, 6º Barão Byron (1788-1824), em sua mansão às margens do lago Genebra, encontro este que produziu uma série de textos, poemas E romances de autoria de Byron, John Polidori (1795-1821), Percy e Mary Shelley, conforme relatado no "Prefácio" da edição de 1831. A obra foi publicada em 1818, sem o devido crédito para a autora em sua primeira edição, mas com um prefácio escrito por seu marido, Percy Bysshe Shelley e é esta primeira versão publicada, mais densa e completa, que a Editora Landmark lança nesta inédita edição.
O romance obteve grande sucesso e gerou todo um novo gênero, tendo grande influência na literatura e na cultura popular ocidental. FRANKENSTEIN: O MODERNO PROMETEU aborda diversos temas ao longo de sua narrativa, sendo a mais gritante a relação entre a criatura e o seu criador, com óbvias implicações religiosas. Uma influência notável na obra é o poema épico O Paraíso Perdido, de John Milton. A influência torna-se explícita tanto através da epígrafe que cita três versos do poema, quanto aparecendo diretamente no desenrolar da trama, sendo um dos livros que a criatura lê.
Preconceito, ingratidão e injustiça também estão presentes. A criatura é sempre julgada por sua aparência, e agredida antes de ter a oportunidade de se defender. Por fim, a inevitabilidade do destino, tema muito desenvolvido na literatura clássica, é constantemente aludida ao longo da obra que se presta a múltiplas interpretações e leituras.

Mary Shelley wrote FRANKENSTEIN: MODERN PROMISED when she was only 19 years old. the work was elaborated after the Shelley couple's meeting with Lord George Gordon Byron, 6th Baron Byron (1788-1824), in his mansion on the shore of Lake Geneva, a meeting that produced a series of texts, poems and novels by Byron , John Polidori (1795-1821), Percy and Mary Shelley, as reported in the "Preface" of the 1831 edition. The work was published in 1818, without due credit to the author in its first edition, but with a preface written by her husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley and this is the first published version, more dense and complete, that Editora Landmark launches in this unprecedented edition.
The novel was highly successful and generated a whole new genre, having a great influence on literature and Western popular culture. FRANKENSTEIN: MODERNO PROMETEU addresses several themes throughout his narrative, the most striking being the relationship between the creature and its creator, with obvious religious implications. A notable influence on the work is John Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost. The influence becomes explicit both through the epigraph that cites three verses of the poem, and appears directly in the course of the plot, being one of the books that the creature reads.
Prejudice, ingratitude and injustice are also present. The creature is always judged by its appearance, and assaulted before it has the opportunity to defend itself. Finally, the inevitability of fate, a theme very developed in classical literature, is constantly alluded to throughout the work that lends itself to multiple interpretations and readings.
