Book Review: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

The Summary
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is set in a small village on the banks of the Mississippi River, around the fictional cities of St. Petersburg and Hannibal, where slavery still existed.
The story begins with Aunt Polly looking for her nephew Tom Sawyer whom she called several times but he didn't respond. Suddenly he came running from the pantry, leaving Aunt Polly very furious, taking a stick to punish him, but he distracted her and escaped, even though getting punished.
The next day, as punishment, Tom Sawyer had to paint an entire fence with white paint, he began reluctantly until he had an idea: he began to move the brush elegantly while whistling, as if he was having fun, to attract the attention of someone passing by. and, he got it from Ben, who offered him an apple so he could paint, many other volunteers arrived later to help him offering him many rewards and Aunt Polly was proud, believing that he had done the work.
In the afternoon, returning home with his friends Tom Sawyer saw in a garden a beautiful blonde girl called Becky Thatcher, who he didn't know but he fell in love instantly. He showed her his skills and she showed that she really liked him, so he went back to a very happy home.
On Monday morning, Tom Sawyer was on his way to school feeling discouraged, when he met Huckleberry Finn, his best friend. He lives on the streets because his father is an alcoholic and there is no one to take care of him, he invites Tom Sawyer to go to the cemetery at night. , to try to do an experiment and Tom Sawyer accepts.
That night, the two went to the cemetery looking for the most recent grave in the cemetery and found it, but a noise of voices and a light scared them and the two hid behind a tree. From the shadows arrive to breach the grave Muff Potter, Injun Joe, and Doctor Robinson, who led by the doctor, excavated the grave, lifted the body, and wrapped it in a blanket.
However, they refuse to work anymore if the doctor doesn't give them five dollars each, to leave with the body, but the doctor doesn't accept paying, thus starting a fight between the three, in this fight Injun Joe stabs the doctor who ends up dying on-site,
The next morning, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn promise each other not to tell anyone anything about what they had seen at the cemetery, for fear that Injun Joe would kill them, as he did the doctor.
The news of the doctor's death spread quickly in the village, but there was still no suspect, however, Muff Potter went to the cemetery to look for his knife and ended up being arrested there as a suspect in the doctor's murder, TomSawyer, and Huckleberry Finn were very sad. for the poor man's arrest, but they couldn't say anything, as Injun Joe was still at large.
Days later, the case of the doctor's murder was no longer remembered. Tom Sawyer, now no longer wanted by Becky Thatcher, his friend Joe Harper feeling dishonored by the beating he received from his mother, and Huckleberry Finn the uncommitted, planned for the three of them to go to an island close to the Mississippi River, with the use of a small raft, on which on this island they would be free to have fun and eat whatever they made, remaining on the island for three days.
In the village, the inhabitants already believed that the three boys had died in the Mississippi River. Everyone was sad, especially Aunt Polly, Tom's adopted brother Sid, and Mrs. Harper, Joe Harper's mother. On Sunday morning, everyone in the village was at the funeral of the three missing boys. Suddenly, in the middle of the sermon, Tom, Joe, and Huck appear in the central aisle of the church, generating a huge community commotion, considering them heroes of the village night.
The peaceful life of the village changed with the news that the trial for the murder of Dr. Robinson would begin and no one was talking about anything else, everyone thought that Muff Potter would be convicted. Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn went to the jail to give him tobacco and to talk to him, the boys knew he was innocent, but everyone in the village said the same thing, that it was obvious that the accused was guilty.
In court, the defense lawyer didn't make much of a point of defending him, calling Tom Sawyer to testify, he was a little anxious but said that it was actually Injun Joe who had murdered the doctor in the cemetery, without waiting Injun Joe jumped out the window from court disappearing into the woods, Muff Potter is found innocent.
Days later, Tom Sawyer, always looking for a new adventure, invites Huckleberry Finn to go with him to an old haunted mansion, far from the village Huck, to look for a hidden treasure Huck loves the idea, in this mansion, the two meet a Mexican and the fugitive Injun Joe in hiding, they were trying to bury the money they had stolen, other times.
The next day, Tom and his friends from the village went on an excursion they had planned before the summer, they went by steamboat, but already there Tom and Huck went looking for Injun Joe, finding him in front of the house that belonged to the widow Douglas, whose husband had died but it was the judge who sentenced Injun Joe to prison and he wanted to take revenge on her, but Huck didn't. left and saved the life of the widow Douglas.
Finally, Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, and Becky Thatcher find Injun Joe hiding trapped inside a cave, starving and short of breath, notifying the authorities who took him into custody. In this cave, Tom and Huck found Injun Joe's hidden treasure, taking two bags of gold coins with them, which they thought of hiding in the Widow Douglas's house.
Arriving at the house Huckleberry Finn receives a big surprise, a party in gratitude for his courage in saving the life of widow Douglas, the lady then invites him to live with her and he accepts, however, he does not get used to the new life and, Tom Sawyer, seeing his friend sad, invites him to form a gang of thieves called ?Tom's Gang?, which Huck accepts.
The Book Analysis
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is an exciting story written by Mark Twain, which takes us to the banks of the Mississippi River in the 1840s.
Tom Sawyer is an adventurous, curious, and playful boy who loves being outdoors with his friends, having fun, and discovering new places to explore.
The story is engaging and fun, with well-developed characters. The detailed description of the setting and the vivid narration transports us, readers, to the time in which the story was written.
The story takes place in a period when the United States still had institutionalized slavery, being more covered in the book "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

The story addresses greed for money by portraying the gold rush in California in 1848 by Injun Joe, which caused much war and disagreement in real history.

The Recommendation

I recommend this book because it represents childhood adventures, by a charismatic character, and it is a book that I consider for intermediate English language students, as it has more sophisticated writing.

The book is bilingual, with both Portuguese and English on the pages, which is very interesting in my opinion for the assimilation and understanding of the book.
The book illustrates the value of life experiences and how adventures can shape a person's character.
