The Great Gatsby - RESUME
The story started when Nick Carraway, after coming back from The Great War, moved to West Egg, Long Island. Carraway was an ambitious young man who had dreams of being successful in bond business and this is why he moved to that place.
Nick rented a small house that was located between two enormous houses. He thought this was awesome because his neighbors could be important people and be in touch with important people was fundamental at that time.
The days passed by and one certain morning he received an invitation from his cousin
Daisy. She found out they were neighbors and invited him to have dinner with her and her husband Tom. Nick found out later he knew Tom from the Yale University when they went together a few years ago.
Nicki met Daisy’s friend Jordan Baker, a young woman who was known as the girl who made a scene at a golf game. Jordan was a long date friend of Daisy and was spending some days at her house.
By the end of the dinner, Nick found out Tom had a mistress in New York. Jordan told him when Tom received a mysterious phone call and Daisy went into the house after him to know what was going on. Jordan Baker also told Nick that his neighbor, the man which Nick had seen only the shadow, was named Gatsby, a powerful man who lived alone and use to through incredible parties at his crib.
Tom Buchanan invited Nick to go to New York with him to have a drink and talk a little. In fact, Tom drove Nick there to introduce his mistress to him. Myrtle Wilson was a woman in her thirties that were married to a car mechanic named George Wilson. Tom seemed to know George and while they were talking Myrtle was getting dressed to go to New York to meet Tom in their secret apartment. Nick saw with his own eyes the orgy that was that party, Myrtle's sister, Catherine went there to be Nick's date for that night and she mentioned Gatsby's parties and how awesome that man was. Nick got even more curious.
A few days later Nick got an invitation from a huge party that Gatsby would make at his place. Very proud Nick dressed up and went to the party. Nick and Gatsby first met each other and then Nick realized Gatsby was a good guy and he wanted to be his friend.
After a few hours locked in the library with Gatsby, Jordan told Nick the story of Gatsby and a young girl named Daisy.
Five years ago, just before the war, Gatsby knew a girl named Daisy in Louisville, Kentucky. Daisy and Gatsby had been lovers at first sight and this love left scars when Gatsby went to the war. Now, all that he wanted was to be together with Daisy again. This was why he used to through huge parties, with the intention to call Daisy's attention from across the bay.
Nick arranged a Tea Time with Daisy and Gatsby in hopes that Daisy still had feelings for him in the same way that he had for her. Daisy went to Nick's house and met Gatsby. They talked, loved each other, and Gatsby invited her to one of his parties. Tom and Daisy went to Gatsby's party and Tom was suspicious of a possible affair between them.
After this party, Tom invited Nick and Gatsby to join him, Daisy and Jordan into a Summer Afternoon at their house. This summer afternoon became a trip to New York the place they could drink so much and enjoy the crowds.
Tom confronted Gatsby that afternoon, he told him he suspected of her wife's affair and he was quite sure that Gatsby was the lover. Daisy cried and they fought. Gatsby took Daisy and they left in his big yellow fancy car.
Coming back to East Egg, Tom saw police cars and ambulance sirens at Wilson's workshop. When they got there and asked what had happened they saw Myrtle's body lying on the floor, dead. She had been killed by a fast big yellow fancy car that knocked her down. By that moment Nick knew what car was that and Tom knew it too.
Nick went after Gatsby to know what had happened and Gatsby told him that Daisy was driving and could not stop the car that hit Myrtle to death. After a long night waiting outside Daisy's house, Gatsby went home in hopes that Daisy would call him later that day. He was wrong.
That afternoon Tom told George Wilson that the car that murdered Myrtle was Gatsby's. George went to Gatsby house with a fire gun and shot him in the swimming pool where he was lying on an airbed thinking about Daisy. Gatsby died that afternoon. So did George who shot himself after killing Gatsby.
Daisy did not appear at the funeral and the house that once was filled with friends and strangers that loved being there was empty. Only Nick and Gatsby's father near the casket.
Gatsby's love was in vain. The idea of getting back with Daisy and get married was only an utopian thought.
