"There is always something to be admired. There is always joy to be found. There is always the possibility of laughter in almost any situation."
Ok, in the beginning I didn't like the book very much. I think this was mainly due to the fact that I couldn't connect with any of the characters, although I liked most of them. But after a while this passed and I started to feel more eager to read.
I simply loved the Huxtable siblings. Stephen is a little angel that I want to put in a little jar (brazilian expression) and Margaret is an angel come down from heaven and sent by God, I just wish she would love herself more and not depend so much on showing others her love. She deserves to be happy.
As for Vanessa and Elliot. In the beginning I didn't mind the fact that Elliot has the "chin up" nor the fact that he doesn't smile, since I'm used to historical romances and we know that everything will work out in the end. But I really started to get bored, not only with the characters, but also with the story when Constantine showed up. The fact that he and Vanessa did things just to annoy Elliot made me angry, since Con and Vanessa did it out of sheer pettyness, especially Vanessa, who didn't know the full story (as far as we know, anyway). But after this situation passed and everything became better, I really got to enjoy the reading more. And through this experience I can say that I probably won't read A Secret Affair, since it is Constantine's story and I don't like him very much right now.
Also, one thing that really bothered me about this book, and I realize this is a constant in Mary Balogh's books, is that a person can NOT be "not pretty" or "plain" and unattractive without people talking about it ALL THE TIME. Like, OK, we already realize that Vanessa is not as beautiful as her siblings, and that she is not very attractive, but Mary Balogh brings this up all the time! It is so boring to read! It seems that a person is nothing more than their physical appearance and that no one can be interested in them because they are not considered beautiful by the standards. And this is something that I also saw when I was reading "Bedwyn Saga", especially in Slightly Scandalous, where all the time the fact that Freyja is not pretty and has a big nose is brought up. I HATED ALL OF THAT!
But OK, apart from that (which is quite a lot hahaha) I was interested in the story and even more so in the other Huxtable siblings. So I will, for sure, continue the series. I just hope the next books will be better.
