Esse livro é um amorzinho. Tem uma pegada infanto-juvenil que me remete àquele período incrível e tenebroso de descobertas da pré-adolescência. Possui ideias interessantes e diálogos bem construídos.

As problematizações são bem colocadas e o enredo é muito gostoso de acompanhar. Parece até um filme da sessão da tarde. Além disso, é bom ter representatividade assexual na literatura.

Lerei tudo que Alex Gino escrever
Rick, assim como os demais livros escritos por Alex Gino, é um infanto-juvenil que aborda temas sensíveis e importantes.

Nesse livro, conhecemos Rick, um menino que está no ensino fundamental e tem um amigo que... não é muito legal. Jeff é um menino agressivo e briguento, que reproduz uma série de preconceitos e que não está muito disposto a rever suas ações. Rick, já há um tempo, não se identifica mais com as posturas de Jeff, mas eles são amigos há tantos anos que acabam mantendo essa relação por força do hábito.

Porém Rick conhece um clube para alunos que não se encaixam na norma cisheterossexual chamado "Espectro Arco-Íris" e lá ele faz amizade com diversos colegas que se identificam das mais variadas formas. No meio disso, Rick começa a questionar sua própria orientação sexual, já que ele nunca sentiu muita atração por meninas... nem por meninos.

Ao longo do livro vamos acompanhando então Rick, seu crescimento e seus dilemas enquanto ele aprende sobre si, sobre os outros e sobre as amizades que quer manter em sua vida. É um livro super fluido, assim como George e You don't know everything,Jilly P!, que presta um papel muito importante para promover a disseminação de discussões tão urgentes a serem feitas com pessoas de todas as idades.

Entre George, Rick e You don't know everything, Jilly P!, continuo preferindo You don't know everything, Jilly P!, mas recomendo demais a leitura de Rick também para quem se interessa por livros infanto-juvenis e espero que alguma editora resolva trazer esse livro para o Brasil em breve!

An alright book from a great author

Livro #8 - Audiobook

Set in the same universe as their debut novel - George - Alex Gino once again creates a story exploring lgbtqia+ youth. Unlike George though, Rick doesn't achieve its full potential.
While in the first one the author created a strong parallel between the protagonist's struggles and the play she might have to perform, reflecting upon what is acting and what is being true to yourself, in this book, Rick didn't have anything nearly that interesting. One of the things I loved the most about George was how Gino incorporated important discussions about the trans community into the story. It was as enlightening for young readers as it was entertaining. It educated without deviating from the storytelling. Which is the exact opposite of what they do here! In this one we have chapters - in the Rainbow Spectrum club - that feel like: alright, kids, now let's sit down and learn! And I'm sorry to say, but that just sounds a bit lazy to me.
And understand this: if I'm comparing both novels is only to illustrate that the author has shown themself capable of writing exceptional lgbtqia+-themed books to middle graders.

I won't deny that I've loved being in contact with Melissa and Kelly again (and wished they had an even bigger part in the story). The grandpa was an okay character, but I didn't feel that he had any great moment with Rick, so I couldn't get too attached to him (again: Melissa's brother had such a smaller part in George and yet I could connect with the character, so...).

Since the category is audiobook, I guess I should mention something about the narration, done by the author themself. Which was okay. Not bad, but not great either.

Look, I'm not saying that this book shouldn't be read. Let's be honest: how many books with asexual/aromantic or questioning main characters are there for readers in this age group?
Rick is definitely not without its importance. But knowing the author literary ability, I deeply wish it had been more.

PS: since I consumed it in English, thought it was fitting to write this review in English as well. Besides, I really do need to practice my writing skills in more formal settings.
