Phyllis Ayame Whitney foi uma escritora de Mistério nascida no Japão, filha de pais americanos. Rara em seu gênero, ela escreveu mistérios tanto para o mercado juvenil quanto para o adulto, muitos dos quais apresentam locais exóticos. Uma crítica do New York Times certa vez a apelidou de "A Rainha dos Góticos Americanos". Ela nasceu no Japão, filha de pais americanos e passou seus primeiros anos na Ásia. Whitney escreveu mais de setenta romances. Em 1961, seu livro The Mystery of the Haunted Pool ganhou um prêmio Edgar dos Mystery Writers of America de Melhor romance juvenil, e ela duplicou a homenagem em 1964, por The Mystery of the Hidden Hand. Em 1988, o MWA deu a ela o prêmio Grand Master pelo conjunto de sua obra. Ela morreu de pneumonia em 8 de Fevereiro de 2008, aos 104 anos.
