It aims at disentangling Paul's personal religion from the schemes and scholasticisms beneath which later generations have buried it. The conviction has grown steadily upon me that union with Christ, rather than justification or election or eschatology, or indeed any of the other great apostolic themes, is the real clue to an understanding of Paul's thought and experience; and I have followed this newer line of approach throughout. It is my hope that the pages which follow may have something to say, not only to Pauline students, but also to the general reader, and particularly to those who today are seeking by a fresh study of the New Testament a surer grip of the centralities of the faith and a deepening of their own spiritual life.
