Dr Barbara Rafferty is an obsessive crusader to save the albatross of the Pacific atoll of Saint-Esprit and when one of her young acolytes is shot on TV it opens her campaign to world wide media attention. From the outpouring of support Dr Barbara begins to turn the deserted island into a sanctuary - a remote paradise home for eco-enthusiasts, idealists and a growing collection of the world's endangered species. James Graham Ballard
Nasceu em 1930, em Xangai, na China. Depois do ataque a Pearl Harbor, foi mandado com sua família para um campo de prisioneiros. Voltou à Inglaterra em 1946 e relatou sua experiência no romance autobiográfico Império do sol, levado ao cinema por Steven Spielberg. Estudou medicina e foi piloto da RAF no Canadá. Publicou seu primeiro conto em 1956. Dono de uma vasta e premiada obra, seu primeiro romance, <i>The drowned world</i> (1962), foi considerado um divisor de águas na ficção científica. Morreu em 2009, vítima de câncer.
