A mystery-play that has seen numerous succesful performances abroad. Its theme, as in the case of all plays of this type, is the struggle of God and Satan for the posession of the soul of Man. In the Tragedy, however, God's antagonist is not the comical Devil of the mediavel mystery-play, but an ironical, philosophical spirit of tragic greatness, who fights for his rightful share of creation - a struggle which eventually leads to downfall. Madách follows Man's fate through a series of monumental scenes taken from world history and reflecting the poet-philosopher's wrestling with disilusionment and hope.
