Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, written by Robert Louis Stevenson, was an immediate success when it was published in 1886. It was quickly dramatised on both sides of the Atlantic and has inspired a multitude of screen adaptations, becoming so well known that "Jekyll and Hyde" is recognised as shorthand for split personality. The story sprang from Stevenson's enduring interest in the existence of both good and evil in human nature. Like Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, the idea for Dr. Jekyll came to Stevenson in a dream. According to his stepson Lloyde Osbourne, it took Stevenson a mere three days of feverish writing to produce the first draft. His wife Fanny, to whom he showed all his work, suggested that the story should be rewritten as an allegory. The final version was ready for publication six weeks later. Although it is an immensely entertaining tale of the supernatural, this novella reflects serious Victorian preoccupations with morality, religion and science. Alongside Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray and Bram Stoker's Dracula, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde formed part of the Gothic revival in literature, a form combining horror with romance (Source: Book Section "Reader's Guide")
