Long before the Wright brothers' plane was airborne at Kitty Hawk, other aircraft were flown. Certainly men designed flying machines before Wilbur and Orville Wright were born. Some successfully demonstrated models, including craft powered by steam. If, as Captain Ferdinand Ferber stated, "to design a flying machine is nothing; to build one is nothing much; to try it in the air is everything," then who really invented the airplane?
