As little Marco describes the horse and wagon he saw on Mulberry Street, they are transformed into an elephant and a band wagon with a retinue of police.
Marco is child who has a great imagination! He's just can't be attached just to reality, he's such a naturally imaginative storyteller, something his dad, an a stern and racional man, will never understand and appreciate (and that makes me so sad, specially when he "lies" about what he truly saw on the Mulberry street)....
