Darcy pede Elizabeth em casamento, que não aceita. Tentando decifrar o comportamento fora do normal do primo, Anne de Bourgh o questiona e se surpreende com a resposta. Ele é aconselhado a não entregar a Elizabeth a carta que continha toda a explicação que ele se sentiu na obrigação de fazer, pelo menos até os ânimos esfriarem, mas Darcy entrega a carta mesmo assim.
