The sandman combines the main features of the work of E. T. A. Hoffmann. In this novel, published in 1817, the author presents the young Nathaniel by letters written to his friend Lothar, brother of his bride Clara. Disturbed by an unexpected visit that sends him to a sinister memory of childhood and provokes in him the most disturbing forebodings, Nathanael tells in his letters the story of the Sandman, according to the boy's family a wicked man who threw sand in the eyes of the children to then plucking and eating them when they did not want to sleep. Plunging the protagonist into a spiral of fear, tension and madness that leads him to the insane asylum, Hoffmann leads the plot to a frightening and surprising outcome.
