The title story, Darcy of the Undead, is the author’s contribution to the growing body of Darcy-as-vampire literature. It begins when Elizabeth is awoken one night by a strange intruder.
In Dr Jekyll and Mr Darcy, Darcy takes Dr Jekyll’s personality-changing potion in the hope of ridding himself of his faults. It works, but unfortunately, where there is a Dr Jekyll, there is also a Mr Hyde.
Frankenstein’s Finest tells the story of Frankenstein's second attempt to create a perfect being. His first creation was a murderous monster, but he learned from his mistakes and created the perfect man, an English gentleman by the name of Fitzwilliam Darcy. The story begins when Dr Frankenstein visits Darcy to tell him that he has succeeded in creating the perfect woman whom he intends to be his mate. Unfortunately for Dr Frankenstein, Darcy has just met his own perfect woman, a Miss Elizabeth Bennet.
Darcy fans should note that these stories celebrate the gothic, rather than the romantic, in Jane Austen’s oeuvre. They are the kind of gothic burlesque which Jane Austen herself enjoyed writing in her early work, particularly Northanger Abbey.
The stories were originally published separately under the same titles, and are now brought together in this collection.
