It's freezing in Fjallbacka in January. A half-naked young woman wanders through the snowy forest and reaches the highway. A car comes out of nowhere and doesn't have time to stop. When Patrik Hedstrom receives the call about the accident, the girl had not yet been identified. She had gone missing four months earlier after not returning from a local riding school. At the same time, Erica Falck is investigating a family tragedy. A widow is accused and sentenced for killing her husband. Erica visits her numerous times, but cannot figure out what the woman is hiding. This family's dark past projects a very large shadow on the present.
