"He doesn’t understand—staying human means inevitable death. What fool fights so hard just to die one day? Someone who hasn’t seen what death looks like, I guess."
Okay, what a beautiful book. And I don't mean in the writing. Although the writing is very well formulated, it is not exactly poetic, but expresses just what we need to read, absorb and feel.
I thought Victoria and her father's relationship was beautiful. It is such a beautiful relationship and one that I can understand, and honestly, I wouldn't even want to imagine what she was going through, it must hurt too much. Because of this I tried to ignore certain things that made me a little uncomfortable during the narrative, like the fact that she would do anything (even dump her best friend) to become a vampire. But, although sometimes this can be uncomfortable in literature, I have to think that if I were in her place, I would have done the same, or even more, for someone I love.
"I’m scared that if I let myself be happy for even one moment that the world’s just going to come crashing down, and I don’t know if I can survive that."
Also, I loved Victoria's relationship with colors and art, and the fact that her emotions are expressed through colors. I thought it was a very beautiful synesthesia, mainly because I feel that, at least for me, it helped me feel closer to her emotions.
And about Nicholas, I know that the ending may be a little disappointing (although I believe it is kind of clear, since the narrative leads up to it) for some, but I loved the fact that it is made explicit how important life is, and not just living, but truly living!
I hope that through this we can realize how good life, although it has its problems, is.
"Because that’s what belief really is, a hope in something outside of yourself, and hope can never be a bad thing. Even if you think it fails you in the end, did it really fail you if it carried you through the toughest parts of your life? I don’t believe so."
