10/11/2011Foolish MadonnaThe English Roses is a foolish book, though not incompetent. Madonna does understand the basic structure of storytelling. One of her moves is to tell the Cinderella story from the stepsisters' point of view. However, she makes the jealous manias so passive that it is hard to believe they are bad in any way as all they really do is respond to lectures about virtue. The other important “move” we should pay attention is that throughout the book, Madonna talks to the reader and says things like "You are probably wondering" when the reader is hardly wondering anything because the story does not take us to any kind of questioning.
It is, in a certain way, surprising to see how meretricious, cynical and little imaginative the music pop star can be. I was waiting for much more, I have to confess it is a pity and a shock to realize how fame and money rule, even the books world.
