Heartbreaking and warm-hearted

When I was younger, I used to think no one would write a story of a hen, because no one but me would care about it. As I was growing up I found out some stories about chickens, I guess it was why I got interested in Clarice Lispector, like her, I thought I knew what a hen's intimate life was like. However, this book showed me I was mistaken. I, who raise them since I was a kid, do not know a thing about chickens. If a rooster represents the voice of the sun, a hen represents the motherhood.

This is a story about a hen ? who named herself Sprout ?. She is an egg-laying hen, which means she lives only to produce eggs, not allowed to hatch them. She was raised for her eggs. But she has a single wish, to sit on an egg and see the birth of a baby. Her desire will lead her to an unlike path. And like a sprout, she will experience each season of the year - even the merciless winter.

?A sprout is the mother of flowers,? Sprout explained. ?It breathes, stands firm against rain and wind, keeps the sunlight, and rears blindingly white flowers. If it weren?t for sprouts, there?d be no trees. A sprout is vital.?

Cleverly written and has deep hidden meanings, wonderful illustrations. I would highly recommend this book to all animal lovers, but especially who is not. A fable on empathy, love and courage. Left my heart fallen apart and left me deep in thought.

The book also inspired the film "Leafie, A Hen into the Wild", which you can watch on Netflix.
