There were about 250 gods in the Maya pantheon, and most of what was known about them—along with the rest of Maya culture—was destroyed when Bishop Diego Landa burned their manuscripts in 1562. The gods are referred to by one group of names in the Quiche Mayan Popol Vuh, whereas the Yucatec Maya used different words. Since many of the Mayan gods appeared in various forms based on the Mayan people's location and historical era, the Mayan people's conception of the gods was intricate and varied.
