The envelope was heavy in my hands and embossed with gold lettering. It was addressed to Master Karl, my Master, and the giant A in calligraphy was like a beacon. I knew it was from her, Mistress Ava.

With trembling hands, I carried the letter to Master. I felt an odd fluttering in my belly. It had been months since we had last seen Mistress Ava, and my mind flittered to all the many scenarios that this letter could portend.

Master was seated at his desk in his office, and he looked up with a smile when I opened the door. I dropped to my knees respectfully and awaited his invitation to enter.
