Past Poisons : An Ellis Peters Memorial Anthology of Historical Crime

Edited by Maxim Jakubowski

The stories in this collection have been written by many historical crime writers all wishing to pay tribute to the work of Edith Pargeter, alias Ellis Peters, who wrote the Brother Cadfael series. The authors have also contributed a short introduction about their sources and influences.

Edith Pargeter, who also writes under the name Ellis Peters, previously combined her passion for history and storytelling in her creation of the much-loved monk, Brother Cadfael. It was she who paved the way for many others to explore the past through the thriving field of historical mysteries, and for this she was loved by readers and other writers alike. Past Poisons is a bumper crop of outstanding new short stories by the leading American and British historical crime writers, all wishing to pay tribute to the work of Ellis Peters.

The anthology includes:

"A Counter-blast to Tobacco" by Paul C. Doherty
"Wheel in the Sky" by Edward D. Hoch
"Starstruck at San Simeon" by Janet Laurence
"Death by Eros" by Steven Saylor
"Damned Spot" by Julian Rathbone
"Showman" by Peter Lovesey
"The Padder's Lesson" by Molly Brown
"To Dispose of an Abbot" by Susanna Gregory
"The Mamur Zapt and the Catherine Wheel" by Michael Pearce
"The Great Brogonye" by David Howard
"The Unkindest Cut" by Kate Ross
"Girl Talk" by Marilyn Todd (1st century BC Rome). A Claudia Seferius short story.
"Invitation to a Poisoning" by Peter Tremayne
"The Last High Queen" by Anne Perry
"To Encourage the Others" by Martin Edwards
"Psalm for a Dead Disciple" by Edward Marston
"Handsel Monday" by Catherine Aird
"An Academic Question" by John Maddox Roberts (51 BC Athens). This short story is an installment of the SPQR series, set immediately prior to the novel The Princess and the Pirates (2005).
Hellfire (Lord John and the Hellfire Club) by Diana Gabaldon (Late 1750s England). This novella is the first work in the Lord John series, a spin-off of the supporting character Lord John Grey from Gabaldon's Outlander series of historical novels.[3][4][5]
"The Party May Yet be Living" by Lindsey Davis.

Maxim Jakubowski is a former publisher and owner of the world-famous Murder One bookshop in London’s Charing Cross Road. As well as being a writer and editor of various past cult publishing imprints, he is acknowledged as a disturbing and controversial voice in contemporary fiction. His collections have sold massively. He is a regular on television and radio where he is an expert on crime, erotica, and film. As a columnist for the Guardian he also writes on the arts for The Times. Maxim is literary director of the prestigious Crime Scene festival held at London’s National Film Theatre. He is the author of many titles including Skin In Darkness, but also the editor for Past Poisons (An Ellis Peters Memorial Anthology of Historical Crime) and Murder Through the Ages.

Marilyn Todd is a critically acclaimed author of short stories and historical thrillers, who "paints antiquity with a particularly suspenseful brush and skillfully tangled plots" (Booklist). Her Roman series features "a gorgeous rich bitch, plotting and spying to survive adverse fortune" (Daily Mail). The Greek novels feature "an abundance of historical tidbits and robust prose" (Kirkus Reviews). All her work embraces humour, suspense and a lively sense of drama, often inspired by the places she visits.

In 2015, her short story "Blood Red Roses" won one of Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine's prestigious Readers Awards.

The year before, "The Wickedest Town in the West" scooped the same award.

And another story, "Room for Improvement", about quickie divorces in 1950s Brighton, was nominated for a Shamus.

She and her husband currently live on a French hilltop surrounded by vineyards and woods, and when she isn't killing people, Marilyn enjoys cooking. Which is pretty much the same thing.
