Peer Gynt (1867), Ibsen's last play in verse, is probably better known for Grieg's rather sugary incidental music than for the original text. That is a pity: by contrast with its predecessor, the austere Brand, this play is a high spirited, poetical fantasy, written in italy with an abandon that was new to Ibsen.
