Darren Shan é a abreviação do nome do autor inglês Darren O´Shaughnessy. Seu primeiro livro Um dia no necrotério roteiro de humor negro para um concurso promovido pela televisão irlandesa foi lançado aos 14 anos. Criança ainda passava a maior parte do tempo lendo histórias horripilantes. Cresceu assistindo a filmes da Hammer, clássica produtora de filmes de terror. Enquanto os outros meninos tinham nas paredes dos quartos pôsteres de astros da música e do futebol, no dele, o grande destaque era para o pôster de um dos filmes do Drácula.
