Act II: This is a tale of bending intelligence to solving problems of life and death. First, Foster writes with a rich imagination: the bitter cold, cutting winds, and frosty vegetation. Second, adapting to native foods and colorful customs. The plot takes their group through various perils as they struggle toward rescue. If there is a quibble, it is that Ethan still thinks like a salesman, even when others see him as a warrior or object of affection. And at one point, his greed almost gets everyone trapped.
