Stefan Hertmans é autor de romances, contos, ensaio e poesia. A sua obra recebeu numerosos prémios, incluindo o Multatuli Prize, o F. Bordewijk Prize, e o AKO Literature Prize. O seu romance Guerra e Terebintina foi nomeado para o Man Booker International Prize em 2017, vendeu 250 000 exemplares e foi traduzido em trinta e quatro línguas. A tradução portuguesa foi contemplada com o Grande Prémio de Tradução, e uma peça baseada no romance fez parte do programa do Festival de Teatro de Almada no verão de 2019. O romance Um Coração Convertido, que teve o aplauso generalizado da crítica, recebeu o prémio E. du Perron. Antigone in Molenbeek, a peça que escreveu sobre a irmã de um bombista suicida, foi levada à cena em numerosas salas de espetáculo de vários países. Em 2019, Hertmans foi distinguido com o Prémio Constantijn Huygens pelo conjunto da obra. O seu mais recente romance (The Ascent) está nomeado para o Libris Prize.
