Estranhamente engraçado em alguns pontos, as tentativas de humor são admiráveis, mas a obra perde pontos pela falta de personagens fortes além do narrador, tangentes constantes que alongam um já longo livro, estranha ausência de táticas militares mais elaboradas, e uma conclusão extremamente não conclusiva, que falha em construir um desfecho digno.

A prosa é interessante, e um narrador em primeira pessoa não confiável é sempre interessante, mas o final arranca uma estrela inteira da nota, pois mal funciona como final. Passagens boas, aqui ou ali, trebuchets tem a chance de brilhar, mas o livro nunca consegue ascender além da mediocridade.
