Georgette Heyer nasceu em 16 de agosto de 1902, em Wimbledon. Quando morreu, aos 71 anos, tinha publicado mais de cinqüenta obras, traduzidas para dez idiomas, entre elas 11 histórias de detetive. As tiragens de seus livros variavam entre 60 mil e 120 mil exemplares - num período de recessão mundial em que não se podia recorrer a trens, jornais e correio.
