Ivan Illich oferece uma crítica breve, incisiva e ainda perturbadoramente atual ao modo industrial de organizar a vida social. A obra generaliza um conjunto de preocupações que Illich já havia desenvolvido em torno da escola, da medicina, da energia e das instituições modernas. Nessa síntese, o problema reside no ponto em que as ferramentas passam a monopolizar capacidades humanas, produzir dependência e subordinar a autonomia cotidiana a sistemas técnicos e profissionais cada vez menos controláveis pelos próprios sujeitos. O maior mérito da obra está em deslocar a discussão sobre tecnologia para o terreno da liberdade, dos limites e da organização social. Apesar dos limites impostos pelo curto tamanho, é um livro forte, curto, radical no melhor sentido e muito útil para pensar uma economia menos orientada pela expansão e mais pela convivência.
