Under the title Approaches to Translation Professor Peter Newmark has for the first time assembled and expanded a number of his papers. in this volume he defines and discusses significant aspects of translation both the theoretical and practical, and in Part II especially, aims to assist translators by proposing criteria and procedures. other themes in the book include the importance os translation in the transmission of culture and the diffusion of knowledge, and in suggesting the relationship between thought and language. The book will be useful to translators, researchers, undergraduates and others with an interest in linguistics, stylistics, comparative literatura, etc. Peter Newmark FIL, formerly Dean of the School of Languages of the Polytechnic Central London, has since 1977, been the chairman of the Council of the Institute of Linguistics. He lectures widely and is the author of many articles for journals, including Incorporated Linguist, Babel, and Fremdsprachen. He has algo translated nooks on Klee and Dürer and written on French translations criticism. His new book A Textbook of Translation is also published by Prentice-Hall Internacional.
