This is the true story of Nneka, an intelligent young girl who came from a poverty-stricken background in the small village community of Obodo-Ukwu in south-eastern Nigeria. Her father was a poor farmer, who could hardly make enough money to feed his wife and three children. Nneka had little hopeof a rosy future;nonetheless, shewas determined to turn her dreams of bettering herselfinto reality. When Nneka went to live with her uncle and aunt in Lagos city, to work as a maid, she had high hopes of continuing her education when they promised to enrol her at college. She was soon prohibited from contacting her parents, and she was mistreated and not permitted to leave the house without her aunt's consent. She wastreatedlike aslave, working around the clock every day and being subjected to sexual abuse by her uncle. Nneka endured seven long years of mistreatment, prevarication and a dreadful waste of her talents at the hands of her uncle, Chief Uzodike, and his wife, Oluchi. Her hopes of a better life for herself and her family began to fade when she became pregnant by her uncle, who had initially promised her heaven and earth.
