Nessa trama acompanhamos Lydia, uma mulher que teve 16 integrantes de sua família assassinados no meio de uma comemoração de 15 anos já que seu marido Sebastián publicou uma matéria em um jornal onde ele identifica o controlador do cartel de drogas da cidade de Acapulco, no México. Lydia sobrevive junto com seu filho Luca, um garoto de 8 anos, e ambos são obrigados a fugir pois o narcotraficante mais importante do cartel local está em busca de vingança.

A partir daí vamos vivendo e acompanhando os cerca de 20 dias da fuga de Lydia e Luca para os Estados Unidos. Acompanhamos não só a fuga física em si, mas também os pensamentos, dúvidas e sentimentos de Lydia, Luca e as demais pessoas que eles vão encontrando pelo caminho.

Apesar das críticas que eu havia lido sobre a obra em relação à autora e a forma como retrata algo que nunca viveu, adorei ter decidido apostar na leitura. Fiquei viciada nesse livro, de verdade! Eu ouvi essa obra em inglês, através de audiolivro e achei muito bem narrado. Acho que isso contribuiu muito para a minha experiência. Já no primeiro capítulo eu não estava querendo largar. O livro realmente começa bombástico e eu gostei muito da forma como foi escrito pois achei bem ágil. Além disso achei os flashbacks bem colocados dentro do contexto, fazendo dessa obra uma trama bem linear, bem fácil de acompanhar. Um aviso importante a se fazer é de alerta de gatilho: o livro tem muita violência sim e tem cenas bem fortes.

Para mim ele levou o status de favorito.
