Shirley Hardie Jackson
Shirley Jackson (1916-1965) é considerada uma das mais influentes escritoras norte-americanas. Herdeira da grande tradição do gótico americano, iniciada com Edgar Allan Poe, teve uma vida curta – tal como Flannery O’Connor, outra das grandes escritoras da sua geração –, mas foi uma autora prolífera. Obteve imediato sucesso e fama com a publicação, em 1948, do conto “The Lottery”, que na época dividiu opiniões e suscitou acesas polémicas. Ao todo escreveu mais de 55 contos, que foram sendo reunidos em variados volumes, o último deles póstumo: “Come Along With Me” (1968). Da sua obra, destacam-se ainda as crónicas familiares “Life among the Savages” (1953) e “Raising Demons” (1957); e os seus romances “The Sundail” (1958), “The Haunting of Hill House” (1959) – alvo de uma recente adaptação cinematográfica, e este «Sempre vivemos no castelo» (1962). Os livros de Shirley Jackson receberam inúmeras distinções e prémios e estão amplamente divulgados nas principais línguas. Em Portugal a sua obra era ainda inédita.
