Vian's final and most serious novel begins with an elegant psychiatrist arriving in a remote town, where he helps deliver the triplets of a woman whose husband is locked up in a bedroom because she abhors him for causing the pain and discomfort of her pregnancy. As the triplets age and Clementine becomes hysterically obsessed with their safety, Timortis spends most of his time searching for patients (he finds only a neutered cat to identify with) and visiting the bizarre village nearby where townspeople attack the local priest at their weekly service, old people are auctioned off at a fair, and an official scapegoat for the citizens' guilt is relegated to fishing junk out of the town river with his teeth. A mix of disturbing incidents and verbal wit, Heartsnatcher is as funny and strange as the best of Raymond Queneau and Eugene Ionesco.

Boris Paul Vian
Escritor francês e músico de jazz, nasceu em 1920 e desde cedo se envolveu com personalidades de vulto do existencialismo francês. Em 1946 surge, envolto em polémica e escândalo, o seu primeiro romance, J’irais Cracher Sur Vos Tombes (Vou Cuspir no seu Túmulo), publicado sob o pseudônimo Vernon Sullivan. Seguem-se L´écume des Jours (A Espuma dos Dias) e L´automne à Pékin (O Outono em Pequim), ambos publicados em 1947 e L´Arrache-Coeur (O Arranca Corações) de 1953. Escreve peças de teatro do Absurdo, como L´Équarissage Pour Tous (Esquartejamento Para Todos), publicado em 1998 ou Le Gouter des Généraux (O Chã dos Generais, publicado em 1965). Morreu aos 39 anos, dentro do cinema, assistindo a uma adaptação de seu romance Vou Cuspir no seu Túmulo.
