Que romance é esse! A maior história de guerra do século XX, talvez.

Há muita força nessa história. Os personagens - depois da leitura, nunca se esquece da poderosa Pilar; ela domina todas as cenas. Eu a achei a emoção instrumental central do livro.

A redação é única, requintada e compassiva. Os cenários na floresta de pinheiros, a comida, o vinho; todos levam você para lá. O diálogo cria rigidez por toda parte, como uma corda esticada até o limite. Durante todo o tempo, senti que estava sentindo esses personagens interagindo. Há uma ternura e uma brutalidade, todas tecidas juntas, representando-nos essa visão microscópica da Guerra Civil Espanhola.

O que é notável é que este cobre apenas três dias na vida das pessoas nesse drama. O tempo se torna uma experiência ampliada dos muitos detalhes da vida nesse pequeno período de tempo.
