The Year of Impossible Goodbyes tells the story of ten year old Sookan, a young Korean girl who has known no life other than the militant ruled society by Japanese military. Sookan must adhere to Japanese ideals and watch as the people of her town and her family suffer under the tyrannical ways of the Japanese. Just as hope is seen when the Japanese get driven out of North Korea, Sookan and her family are forced to adhere to more military rule from Russian.
