The city-state of Saraykeht dominates the Summer Cities. At the heart of the city's influence are the poet-sorcerer Heshai and the captive spirit, Seedless, whom he controls. For all his power, Heshai is weak, haunted by memories of shame and humiliation. A man faced with constant reminders of his responsibilities and his failures, he is the linchpin and the most vulnerable point in Saraykeht's greatness.

Far to the west, the armies of Galt have conquered many lands. To take Saraykeht, they must first destroy the trade upon which its prosperity is based. Marchat Wilsin, head of Galt's trading house in the city, is planning a terrible crime against Heshai and Seedless. If he succeeds, Saraykeht will fall.

Amat, House Wilsin's business manager, is a woman who rose from the slums to wield the power that Marchat Wilsin would use to destroy her city. Through accidents of fate and circumstance Amat, her apprentice Liat, and two young men from the farthest reaches of their society stand alone against the dangers that threaten the city.

Uma viagem.

Foi meu primeiro livro do Daniel Abraham. E não posso mentir, só resolvi ler por causa da relação dele com o George R.R. Martin. Mas apesar de BFFs, a amizade entre os dois termina aí,não pensem que Daniel Abraham é um aprendiz do Martin, sua literatura é complexa e original.
No início eu estava desmotivada com o lento desenrolar da narrativa e encantada com o mundo de Abraham. Esse livro é o primeiro de uma série de quatro livros chamada " The Quartet Price".
A narrativa se passa nas cidades do Khaiem. Cada cidade possuí um rei e governo autônomo,que se submete de certa forma ao Dai-Kvo. O Dai-Kvo é o responsável pelo treinamento dos "Poets", esses são os responsáveis por "capturar" e "dar forma" à ideias- espíritos chamados Andats.
Os espíritos desempenham papéis importantes em cada cidade, em A Shadow In Summer conhecemos Seedless, um Andat, que como seu próprio nome diz, "retida as sementes", papel importante no comércio de algodão na cidade de Saraykeht. Mas esse espírito é extremamente inteligente, e pra mim o personagem que proporcionou os melhores diálogos do livro.
Outro ponto que me surpreendeu nos costumes do universo do livro foi a linguagem corporal. Os habitantes de Khaiem falam com palavras, mas fazem gestos característicos para denotar sentimentos, agradecimentos e etc. Além disso, não usam bolsos, mas qualquer coisa é guardado nas mangas das roupas.
Todos esses pequenos detalhes fazem com que a leitura seja bem original e que a cada página uma nova descoberta tome vida.
Os personagens principais vão criando nuances e até o final da narrativa é impossível não sentir um carinho por cada um deles.
Escrever uma resenha sobre esse livro é querer dar spoilers, contar toda a estória, descrever as características de cada personagem. Mas isso é papel do leitor. E acho que todo amante de fantasia deveria dar uma olhada no trabalho de Daniel Abraham.

"Possibility is a wide field, dear. Can't is a word for small imaginations" Seedless said from behind him, but Maati didn't turn back.
