Vincent Van Gogh wrote hundreds of letters to his brother Theo as well as to family members and fellow artists including Paul Gauguin and Emile Bernard. In many of them he described, in painstaking detail and beautiful prose, the progress of his work. Van Gogh's Letters presents more than 150 of these stirring letters, excerpted and newly translated, and set side-by-side with the art it describes, including sketches, drawings, and paintings. The result is an elegantly rendered collection that allows us to see the world through the eyes of one of the greatest artists of all time.

What an amazing book. what an amazing artist van gogh was. reading his letters (so personal and toughtful, by the way) made me understand and admire him even more. he was a tortured artist because the world he lived in was increasingly rejecting art. there is no space for art in the modern capitalist world. he once said that "art is to console who is broken by life". i feel much more consoled after this book. his works tried to capture that exact moment when we look at the sky, or the scenary, and we realize that we are nothing more than a single part of this infinity universe that we are in. and there is beauty to it. as humans, we are not supposed to conquer the space and the seas, we are suppose to admire it and just imagine what the other side holds for us. maybe we'll never find out, but he have art to imagine it. i'll never, ever, look at one his paintings the same way again.
