In A New Life, Bernard Malamud--generally thought of as a distinctly New York writer--took on the American myth of the West as a place of personal reinvention. When Sy Levin, a high school teacher beset by alcohol and bad decisions, leaves the city for the Pacific Northwest to start over, it's no surprise that he conjures a vision of the extraordinary new life awaiting him there: "He imagined the pioneers in covered wagons entering this valley for the first time. Although he had lived little in nature Levin had always loved it, and the sense of having done the right thing in leaving New York was renewed in him." Soon after his arrival at Cascadia College, however, Levin realizes he has been taken in by a mirage. The failures pile up anew, and Levin, fired from his post, finds himself back where he started and little the wiser for it. A New Life--as Jonathan Lethem's introduction makes clear--is Malamud at his best: with his belief in luck and new beginnings Sy Levin embodies the thwarted yearning for transcendence that is at the heart of all Malamud's work.

Bernard Malamud
Foi um romancista e contista americano de descendência russo-judaica. Nascido em Nova York, no bairro do Brooklyn, sua literatura é caracterizada por retratar heróis humilhados e em luta contra o próprio destino. Filho de um comerciante judeu, foi educado no Erasmus Hall High School (1928-1932). No período da Grande Depressão, trabalhou como operário para pagar os estudos. Entrou para o City College de New York (1932), onde recebeu o B.S. (1936). Entrou na Universidade de Colúmbia (1937) onde obteve o Master (1942) e tornou-se professor, especialmente de literatura, profissão que exerceu durante toda a vida, em Nova York, paralela à sua produção literária. Trabalhou em um escritório do Bureau of Census, Washington, D.C. (1940-1948), enquanto ensinava na Erasmus Hall High School. Começou a escrever (1941) e publicou seus primeiros trabalhos dois anos depois: Benefit Performance e The Place Is Different Now (1943). Casou (1945) com Ann de Chiara; de Greenwich Village, e depois ensinou na Harlem Evening High School (1948-1949) e no Oregon State College, Corvallis, Oregon (1949-1961). Depois disso ainda ensinou no Bennington College, Vt. (1961-1966 / 1968-1986), mas dedicou-se quase que exclusivamente a escrever e a viajar pela Europa, Rússia e Israel. Ganhou o National Book Award e um Prêmio Pulitzer com o romance The Fixer (1966), conhecido no Brasil como o famoso O Homem de Kiev. Seus principais romances foram The Natural (1952), The Assistant (1957), com o qual ganhou o prêmio Rosenthal daquele ano, A New Life (1961), Dubin's Lives (1979) e God's Grace (1982). à ficção curta, especialmente contos, marcada pela influência de Anton Tchékov e James Joyce, produziu as coleções The Magic Barrel (1958), com o qual venceu seu primeiro National Book Award (1963), Pictures of Fidelman (1969) e Rembrandt's Hat (1973). Morreu de ataque cardíaco, em New York, N.Y., deixando uma obra frequentemente marcada por motivos e temas judaicos.
