O livro expõe o pessimismo, o hedonismo e a falta de perspectiva que envolviam a juventude dos anos vinte. Muitas das ideias, angústias e contradições do protagonista se voltam a questões experimentadas por muitas pessoas, por isso é fácil se identificar com o que ele está passando. Tenho que admitir que o livro se torna arrastado em muitas passagens, mas isso não apaga seus pontos positivos.
