Frances Elisa Hodgson Burnett
Nasceu em Manchester, Inglaterra, em 1849. Em 1865, depois da morte de seu pai, mudou-se com a mãe e os irmãos para a região rural do Tennessee, Estados Unidos, onde a família enfrentou dificuldades para ganhar seu sustento. Aos dezessete anos, Burnett vendeu seu primeiro conto para uma revista, e aos 22 já havia ganhado o suficiente para voltar à Inglaterra. De 1887 até sua morte, manteve casas tanto na Inglaterra quanto nos Estados Unidos. Seus dois casamentos terminaram em divórcio - o primeiro, com o dr. Swan Burnett, com quem teve dois filhos, durou de 1874 a 1898; e o segundo, com o ator Stephen Townsend, de 1900 a 1902.
