The novel that gave life to Hawkeye Pierce, Trapper John, Hot Lips Houlihan, Frank Burns, Radar O'Reilly, and the rest of the gang that made the 4077th MASH like no other place in Korea or on earth. The doctors who worked in the Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals (MASH) during the Korean War were well trained but, like most soldiers sent to fight a war, too young for the job. In the words of the author, "a few flipped their lids, but most of them just raised hell, in a variety of ways and degrees."

Lot's of fun! Just like I remembered.

Richard Hooker (Hornberger) would never win a literary prize, but his narration is agile and to the point as he prepares and develops the series of situations lived by the now famous Hawkeye, Trapper, and Duke; these three doctors are witty, funny, and imaginative, as they engineer, improvise and immediately set in motion some of the most irreverent adventures ever concocted in such a disciplined institution as the army. He also brings out the physical and psychological terrors of war, lending truthfulness to his story. I guess Hooker did win a prize after all… the millions he must have gotten for the movie and TV series rights.
