Bel Canto, Ann Patchett

Duas coisas me incomodaram a priori em Bel Canto: Não importa a nacionalidade, o status social ou a escolaridade, ninguém é imune ao fascínio da Ópera. Eu particularmente não sou um conhecedor de Teatro e Música, mas não me surpreenderia - muito pelo contrário, seria bastante natural - se houvesse pelo menos um personagem em Bel Canto que se aborrecesse com o drama encenado pela mundialmente famosa soprano Roxanne Coss, considerando a gama diversificada de personagens nesse livro, que vai de diplomatas a garçons, de poderosos empresários a terroristas. Mas todos parecem amá-la, sem exceção. Em segundo lugar, surgindo com personagens de todos os cantos do mundo, Ann Patchett não consegue evitar os clichês. Então os italianos são exageradamente emotivos; os franceses, passionais e bons cozinheiros; os russos, taciturnos; os alemães, rebeldes; os latinos, desorganizados e passivos; os japoneses, serenos e inteligentes; os gregos, longevos; e tantos outros esteriótipos étnicos.
Baseado numa experiência real (Em 1996, o presidente do Peru e muitos de seus convidados tornaram-se reféns por vários meses de uma organização terrorista), Bel Canto explora a forma como terroristas e reféns se relacionam: Muitos formam fortes laços de amizade, alguns se apaixonam, outros reveem suas prioridades, todos enxergam essa experiência, de alguma forma, como positiva. Ou seja, a Síndrome de Estocolmo nunca foi tão bem representada! rs.
O final é apropriadamente trágico (como uma ópera!) e muito satisfatório ao sublinhar a existência idílica e pacífica que este grupo tão discrepante levava. Como alguém disse uma vez e o que resume Bel Canto: "A música é a linguagem universal, não precisa ser traduzida."
